This project is a redevelopment of the existing pavilion (built in 1971), which is no longer compliant or suitable for user-groups’ needs, The new pavilion design provides spaces for multiple sports groups, community use, and potentially social events (function spaces, club areas) with associated changerooms, toilets, storage and amenities. It is designed to be gender-friendly and fully accessible, catering to people of all ages and abilities.
The design is simple and functional focusing on maximising space and minimising cost. The interior is minimal and open, with a central corridor access that acts as a spine between recreational/event facilities and sports areas. Materials selection considered environmental as well as economic criteria. Procurement aligned with the client’s social and cultural criteria for sustainability. The services strategy was also focused on passive strategies, where possible to achieve sustainable, life cycle and minimum maintenance outcomes.
Gwynne Park is the largest recreation reserve in Armadale and serves multiple clubs, including AFL, cricket and community sport groups already using the precinct. With limited sporting infrastructure in nearby developing suburbs, this precinct continues to be a central hub for district-level sport. The redevelopment is part of the, City of Armadale’s broader Community Infrastructure Plan, which aims to upgrade and modernise existing sporting and recreational facilities to match population growth and evolving community needs.
It is anticipated that the project will be completed early 2027.
